Soil Probe
Soil probe is used by Geotechnical Engineers, Geologists, and field technicians to identify soft soil areas in the field. Soft soil areas could be in shallow foundation trenches or area about to receive compaction. It is quick and dirty qualitative method to isolate such areas which ultimately requires to be excavated and replaced by suitable soils. This soil probe is 36″ long, constructed of 3/8” steel bar with tapered tip. It is common to use both hands to apply the pressure and penetrate at least 2 to 6 inches depending of the soil stiffness. If the soil probe penetrate deeper than 12 inches, the engineer should ask the grading contractor to excavate that area and then recheck the fresh surface again. For further technical information refer to my Consulting Geotechnical Engineering & Practice Book (VOL. I) available on amazon books.
Soil probe may also be used in frozen lakes to check the quality and thickness of the ice crust.
